Which cars now qualify for the £3,750 Electric Car Grant?

The UK Government has expanded the Electric Car Grant again — and four more electric models have just been added to the list of vehicles eligible for the full £3,750 discount. At the same time, an additional £1.5 billion in funding has been confirmed to support the switch to electric between now and 2030.

With several popular models now falling under the grant’s £35,000 price cap, this update could have a noticeable impact on both new and used EV prices heading into 2026.

What exactly has changed?

The Electric Car Grant — which offers either £3,750 or £1,500 depending on the model — has had its eligibility list expanded.

The Government has now confirmed that four more vehicles qualify for the full £3,750:

  • Hyundai Kona Electric
  • Vauxhall Mokka Electric
  • Peugeot e-2008
  • MG4 Trophy Long Range

These join an expanding list of EVs priced under the scheme's £35,000 cap. Higher-spec versions of some models qualify for the £1,500 partial grant.

Why this matters for buyers

With EV prices rising over recent years, the re-expanded grant applies rare downward pressure. It brings several well-reviewed EVs back into reach for families, commuters and first-time buyers.

For example:

  • A £3,750 discount on a £34,000 EV brings the price to £30,250.
  • A £1,500 discount can reduce monthly finance payments by around £20–£35.
  • Lower new prices may push used EV prices down further in 2026.

The newly eligible EVs

Hyundai Kona Electric

A strong all-rounder with excellent efficiency and real-world range. Now one of the best-value family EVs under the £35k threshold.

Vauxhall Mokka Electric

Stylish, compact and ideal for urban and suburban drivers. The added grant makes it far more competitive in the small crossover market.

Peugeot e-2008

A refined small SUV with a premium feel. The grant makes certain trims significantly more affordable.

MG4 Trophy Long Range

Already one of the UK’s best-value EVs. Now even more appealing thanks to the grant applying to the highly efficient Long Range variant.

How the Electric Car Grant works

£3,750 full grant

  • EV must cost £35,000 or less
  • Must meet battery and efficiency criteria
  • Must deliver strong real-world range

£1,500 partial grant

  • For trims or specs slightly above £35,000
  • Still deducted automatically at purchase

The grant applies whether buying outright or via finance, leasing, salary sacrifice or dealer offers.

Impact on the used EV market

This expansion doesn’t just help new-car buyers — it also influences used prices.

  • Lower new EV prices apply downward pressure on 2–3-year-old models.
  • More Kona, Mokka, e-2008 and MG4 models may enter the used market sooner.
  • Used EVs could become more affordable through 2026.

Should you buy now or wait?

If your preferred model has just become eligible, buying now may offer the best value you’ll get for some time. However, if you're looking for a nearly-new EV, waiting could bring further savings as prices continue to soften.

Final thoughts

The updated Electric Car Grant provides meaningful support at a time when many households are feeling the squeeze. With more mainstream EVs now qualifying for the full £3,750 and additional government funding secured, 2026 could be an important year for wider EV adoption.
